Here’s everything we tell guests when they ask where to paddle out.

Best Surf Spots in Jacksonville

Each of these spots has its own personality. Locals usually pick based on swell direction, wind, and crowd tolerance.

• The Poles (Hanna Park): Located inside Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park ($5 vehicle entry), this break is a longer walk from the lot but rewards you with more consistent waves and noticeably fewer crowds than the pier. Best on east-southeast swells, and ideal for intermediates.
• Jacksonville Beach Pier: The most social spot in town — decent swells, plenty of lineup chatter, and easy parking nearby. Crowds can stack up on weekends and during summer break, so go early. Beginners should give the pier itself a wide berth.
• 18th Street South: Less crowded with mellow, forgiving waves. The vibe is laid-back and welcoming to beginners. Public beach access with metered street parking.
• Neptune Beach & Atlantic Beach: Cleaner morning glass and longboarder-friendly waves. The crowd skews older and more local here — surf etiquette goes a long way.

Best Time to Surf in Jacksonville

Florida’s First Coast has a season for every skill level. Generally, the bigger the swell, the further offshore the source.

• Fall (Sept–Nov): Arguably the best time of year. Hurricane season pushes long-period swells our way, and the beach crowds thin out after Labor Day. Water stays warm — mid-70s well into November.
• Spring (Mar–May): Decent waves, warming water, and lighter crowds before summer break hits. Spring breakers come, but they’re usually not the surfers.
• Summer: Gentle, forgiving surf — perfect for beginners and kids. Water is bath-warm and you won’t need a wetsuit.
• Winter: Strong Atlantic swells reward advanced surfers. Water drops into the 50s — pack at minimum a 3/2 wetsuit, with booties for the coldest weeks.

Tips for Visiting Surfers

A few things to know before you paddle out, especially if you’re new to the area:

• Check the forecast. Locals use Surfline or Magicseaweed for swell + wind. East-northeast wind = clean; south wind = blown out.
• Respect the lineup. Wait your turn, don’t drop in, and chat with the regulars — Jax is friendly but the locals notice.
• Watch for rip currents. If you’re a beginner, swim with a buddy and stay near a lifeguard tower. The Atlantic here pulls.
• Sunscreen + rash guard. Even in fall, four hours in the water means a serious sunburn without UPF protection.
• Parking fills early on weekends. If you’re driving in for a dawn patrol session, leave by 6:30am in summer.

If you’ve never surfed — or just want a refresher — a local instructor will get you up faster than a YouTube tutorial. Lessons typically run 90 minutes and include board + rash guard rental.
