Where We Take Our Friends to Eat When They Visit Jacksonville
Our first Navy duty station brought us to Jacksonville, Florida in the early 2000s. Even then, we were amazed by how special this part of Florida is—gorgeous beaches, mild weather (yes, we actually get four seasons), palm-tree-lined streets, and plenty to do within a short drive or bike ride.
If you’ve ever visited Jacksonville, you know it’s one of the best places to live. That’s why we decided to move back with our family in 2020.
So when friends or family tell us they’re coming for a visit, we already know exactly where we’re taking them.
The best parts of Jacksonville—especially at the Beaches—aren’t the big-ticket attractions or the places with the longest lines. They’re the local coffee shops, the restaurants you linger at longer than planned, and the parks that somehow keep both kids and adults happy.
Here’s how we show people our Jacksonville.
First Things First: Take it Easy
We never over-schedule the first day. Jacksonville Beach has a way of setting the pace—if you let it.
Coffee + a Walk
We usually start at Southern Grounds in Atlantic Beach Town Center. This specific location is our favorite, thanks to its open courtyard, sunshine, occasional live music, and walkable surroundings—just one block from the ocean.
After coffee and a bite, we’ll stroll through the Atlantic Beach neighborhood. Lush palm trees, beautiful oceanfront homes, playgrounds tucked along the way, and beach accesses on almost every other block make it easy to slow down and explore. If you want to leave the sidewalk and walk directly on the sand, it’s never far.
If guests have been traveling all day, this alone is enough to reset everyone.

Our Go-To Meals (Easy, Casual Wins)
Choosing restaurants depends on who you’re with, but these are our tried-and-true favorites when hosting visitors.
Looking for something relaxed and crowd-pleasing?
-
North Beach Fish Camp – coastal, casual, and always a hit
-
Taco Lu – fun, flavorful, and very popular (make reservations!)
-
ABBQ Meat & Drink – perfect if you have kids, thanks to the outdoor yard where they can run while adults enjoy drinks and great BBQ
These are places where conversation flows easily and no one feels rushed—or underdressed.
The Spot We Save for a “Wow” Moment
At least once during every visit, we like to show friends Jacksonville from above.
Sunset Drinks & Memorable Views
-
Casa Marina Penthouse Lounge – the view does most of the talking
-
Restoration Hardware Rooftop Restaurant – a short drive to St. Johns Town Center, perfect for shopping + a very photogenic lunch
-
Mezza Luna – one of our personal favorites, with Italian fare, wood-fired pizza, and a charming courtyard (often with live music)
Even people who swear they “don’t like Florida” tend to soften up after one of these.
When Kids Are in the Mix
Traveling with kids is where Jacksonville really shines.
Parks We Actually Use
-
Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park – biking, beach access, and easy hiking trails (best in winter and spring—mosquitos are real in summer). Grab subs from Publix and turn it into a picnic. You might even spot alligators.
-
Sunshine Playground or Gonzales Park – fantastic play structures, a skate park, and nearby food options like SoNapa Grill
-
Friendship Fountain and Playground – pair it with Riverside Arts Market on Saturday mornings (note: $5 parking)
And of course… the beach. With consistent sunshine and warm weather, it’s hard to resist sand and waves.
The key is balance: somewhere kids can play freely, and adults can breathe.
Sweet Treats (Always)
No Jacksonville visit ends without something cold and sugary.
-
Mayday Ice Cream – Nutella fans, try the Aviator (Nutella ice cream with Biscoff and hazelnuts)
-
Whit’s Frozen Custard – especially the Atlantic Beach location for post-beach cones and people-watching
-
Dreamette – worth the short drive for soft-serve lovers
It’s simple, nostalgic, and somehow makes the trip feel complete.
Night Out (Adults Only)
When it’s just the adults, these are our favorites:
-
Eleven South – elegant, intimate, and a true hidden gem
-
O-Ku – stylish, contemporary sushi right in Jax Beach Town Center
-
Catullo’s Italian – a tiny, no-reservations gem for handmade pasta lovers. If you’re not able to snag one of the cozy tables, grab a seat at the bar. The bartenders are generous with the wine. (Our recommendation is to go early or after 8pm)
Why We Made a Guidebook
After years of hosting friends, family, and hundreds of guests across our vacation rentals, we realized we were sharing the same recommendations over and over again—not because they’re trendy, but because they work.
So we put them all in one place.
We created a free Jacksonville Guidebook with our favorite restaurants, coffee shops, parks, beaches, and local experiences—the same ones we share with the people we care about most.
